Minnesota State Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the Minnesota State system. It consists of 15 volunteer members who are appointed by the Governor. The board includes a trustee from each of the state’s eight congressional districts, four trustees from the state at-large, and one student trustee from each institution type: state university, community college, and technical college. Under Minnesota Statute Chapter 136F, the board is charged with oversight of the system and has responsibility for system planning, academic programs, fiscal management, personnel, admissions requirements, tuition and fees, and rules and regulations.
The Board elects a chair and vice chair from among its voting membership at its annual meeting in June. Length of chair and vice chair terms are defined in Board Policy 1A.2. The board also appoints a chancellor who serves as the chief executive officer of the Minnesota State system.
