The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system is asking for $292.6 million in capital projects in the 2005 legislative session after the Legislature last year adjourned without approving a bonding bill.

The $292.6 million in construction, renovation and repair projects in the renewed request will benefit every state college and university across Minnesota. Increases in construction costs will add an estimated 8.63 percent to the cost of the building projects in the request compared with last year, when the list totaled $274.9 million.

Top priority is a request for $108.6 million for repair and replacement projects on all campuses. These funds will be used to replace 2.2 million square feet of roofs, provide fire and safety improvements for 2.5 million square feet of space, and make mechanical and electrical improvements to 500,000 square feet of space.

The request also includes capital projects such as science space, laboratories and technology-equipped classrooms. Major construction projects include completion of science buildings at Winona State University and Minnesota State University Moorhead.
