Ann Valentine today was appointed president of Minnesota State Community and Technical College by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees.
Valentine, 48, has served as vice president and provost at Gateway Technical College, Kenosha Campus, in Kenosha, Wis. since 2000. As chief executive officer for a campus in a multi-campus system, she provided leadership in instruction, curriculum, student services, information technology, enrollment management and campus growth. Before serving on the Gateway campus, she was the dean for instructional services at Independence Community College in Independence, Kan.
"Her reputation precedes her," said Board Chair Robert Hoffman. "Dr. Valentine is a dynamic and energetic leader. It's exciting to have her lead one of our great institutions. She's a good fit for that college."
Valentine holds a Ph.D. in higher education and a master's degree in public administration, both from Iowa State University. Valentine also earned a bachelor's degree from Mount Mercy College and an associate degree from Kirkwood Community College, both in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The search committee was led by President Ronald Wood of Minnesota West Community and Technical College.
"She will be a tremendous asset to Minnesota State Community and Technical College and to the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system," President Wood said. "She knows the institution and the challenges it faces."
Chancellor James H. McCormick, who recommended the appointment, said: "Dr. Valentine has an impressive background, both in liberal arts and in technical education. And, she is a product of a community college. I'm very impressed with her energy. She's going to make a great president."
In accepting the appointment, Valentine said, "I'm very honored and pleased to be given this opportunity to lead Minnesota State Community and Technical College into the future." She added, "I did buy a Vikings T-shirt, so I've converted from the green and gold."
Valentine has four children, ages 12 to 20. She will become president July 1, replacing president Ken Peeders, who is retiring.
Minnesota State Community and Technical College serves more than 4,500 students in credit courses annually and provides a variety of educational programs and delivery options at its four campuses in Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, Moorhead and Wadena.
