The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees on Wednesday approved a new name - South Central College - to reflect the institution's new status as a comprehensive community college.
South Central College, formerly known as South Central Technical College, has campuses in Faribault and Mankato. The Board of Trustees approved the change in the college's mission from a technical college to a comprehensive community college at its March meeting.
"This new name maintains the proud heritage of this fine college. The new name also enhances the value of the institution to the area," said Chancellor James H. McCormick.
South Central's President Keith Stover requested the name change after consulting with students, staff and faculty. "We're excited about providing more post-secondary education and training opportunities for residents in this region," Stover said. "And, we believe this new name will provide new impetus for the residents to explore the myriad of possibilities at South Central."
As a comprehensive community college, South Central offers the two-year associate of arts degree in addition to associate of science and applied science degrees. The college serves about 5,200 students with programs in agriculture; carpentry and cabinetmaking; hotel, restaurant and institutional cooking; medical laboratory technician; speech-language pathology assistant; and wireless communication technician; among others.
